Malawi Establishes Public-Private DFI Based on Momentus’ Feasibility Study and Business Plan

We prepared a feasibility study to establish a public-private national DFI in Malawi, then developed a comprehensive business and implementation plan to operationalize the entity.

Establishing a new Development Finance Institution (DFI) requires various levels of data gathering, market analysis, and planning, and other detailed tasks. That is why CDH Investment Bank (CDHIB) and the Government of Malawi engaged Momentus (formerly IFCL) when they sought to create a public-private national DFI in Malawi.

We began with a feasibility study for establishing theDFI that included a detailed overview and analysis of the market in Malawi and the parameters and key considerations by which a DFI could operate. This was presented to and analyzed with key stakeholders and helped inform the business plan.

We then developed a comprehensive business plan that included the rationale for the DFI, outlined its business focus, product descriptions, investment strategy, marketing and business development strategy, Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) framework operating model, ownership and capitalization, governance framework, risk management, and capitalization models. We also developed a financial plan and model, as well as an implementation plan.

The resulting institution, Malawi Agriculture and Industrial Investment Corporation, was established in 2018 and is now fully operational.
